What's your song?

Music has predominantly been a significant portion of almost the entire 23 years of my life so far. Fortunately, a major extent of it can be credited to the atmosphere I grew up in. A dictionary definition of music which I was taught in my elementary years would be pitch, melody and harmony in different textures and tones culminated together. Then people made songs and beautified them with lyrics.

Within music, there are so many different genres throughout the world - Indian and Western classical, Jazz, Rock, Fusion, Metal, the list is never ending..Languages, skill levels, voice texture - a lot of technical stuff. But they all speak a universal language - human emotions.

It is strange sometimes how we bond with music on an emotional level, maybe happy or sad , maybe romantic, maybe psychedelic .. I don't know, the factors can be varied and intricate or simple according to the situation. Then comes in the mood angle. We listen to music according to the scenario in which we are.

All of us at some point of time somewhere have conversed: " This is my all time favorite song . I have so many memories and nostalgia associated with it. " Music, when perceived from a 'telescope', may be mere entertainment. But viewing it from a microscopic viewpoint, it is actually a guide, a reflection, a constant reminder of the beauty and intricacies of human beings in general and life in particular. Every song which has a meaning has a story, a cute hidden beauty, a friend departing or meeting someone special, a passionate fire or a break-up, a dear person departing or someone whom you haven't seen in ages. The probabilities can be varied, but there is always that song at the back of your mind.

I was out with a friend last night who probably was one of the very first people I came to know when I landed in the United States. We played a song which he used to dislike - I recall him mentioning it as a cursed song. Surprisingly or ironically, today this song has a completely different meaning for him. He met the love of his life and said, " The curse was removed when I first laid my eyes on her and she on mine. " I wasn't really sure how to react to that but thinking about it when I am sitting alone now, that is surely one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

I have mine too, a lot of them. If you ask me, I probably would never be able to pick up one or two or even a bunch. But this is the only song which is on my mind right now :

You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a saviour to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now ?
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow
Back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh-oh come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh-oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run...

So, what is your song? What is that song which made me you first fall in love, have your first crush, make you happy, sad?

  1. Well, this post wonderfully captures what I had to say in my first blog post.

Apart from the song I dedicated my blog to, a song that has been extremely special to me would be the eponymous song by Return to Forever.
It dates back to a day in November 2008. This particular incident makes me believe in an indefinable connection between us humans and the music we hear :)
